Please Note: If the Online Scheduler is used to book a Non-Residential Appointment, and no prior authorization was given, the appointment will be cancelled, with or without advance notice.
Piano Tuning
When you get to the Online Scheduler, please select "Piano Tuning: New Client." This appointment option includes a complimentary Piano Evaluation. I will inspect your piano, and determine what services will be needed.
Most pianos will only require a standard Piano Tuning service. But some may require additional services to get them back in tune.
To determine what services are needed for your piano, I will measure the pitch of several notes, to see how far out-of-tune your piano is.
If your piano is within about 4% (8¢) of Concert Pitch, a standard Piano Tuning service should be sufficient. The fee for this service is $180, and the process takes up to two hours. This is the most common scenario for pianos that were tuned within the last 1-2 years, and have not been relocated.
If your piano is more than about 4% (8¢) from Concert Pitch, additional pre-tuning services will be needed: There are over 200 piano strings in every piano, and these are actually made of steel wire. An adjustment of more than 4% requires substantial tightening and recalibration of the steel wire tension. This process is intensive, and takes time.
And this step must be done first, so that the piano is able to accommodate the precise, fine adjustments of a standard Piano Tuning procedure.
The most common pre-tuning procedure is a Pitch Correction. This procedure takes an extra hour, and the additional fee is: [(Upright Piano: $65) (Grand Piano: $75)]
In this scenario, the entire Piano Tuning appointment will take between 2.5-3 hours to complete. Pianos that have been relocated, or not tuned within the last 1-2 years, often require a Pitch Correction before they can be tuned.
If your piano has not been tuned in a very long time, and is extremely out-of-tune, more extensive Pre-Tuning services may be needed.
For example: If the piano is more than about 15% (30¢) from Concert Pitch, I will need to tighten the strings slowly and incrementally, to avoid snapping them.
If this is the case with your piano, a second appointment may be needed to safely complete the entire piano tuning process. This is very rare.
Please note that during a Piano Tuning, the location will need to be "Library Quiet." Please refrain from booking when young children are present, or when housekeepers or landscapers are working nearby.
Many homes are "open concept," with no doors or walls separating the main living areas. If your piano is located in this type of space, please note: there can be no activity within these areas during a Piano Tuning appointment.
This includes talking, cooking, cleaning, doing dishes, watching TV, etc.
If you are in a room that is far enough away from the piano, and the room has a door that can be closed, then normal activity can occur in there.
Attention: If you or anyone in your household is sick with a cold / flu / covid etc., please contact me ASAP to reschedule your appointment. I enter hundreds of homes each year, and need to be very careful.
